The environmental inspectors of the City of Skopje have recently started an action for cleaning and punishing private landfills, ie property on which the owners have allowed the creation of waste in the Skopje municipalities due to negligence or lucrative reasons. Based on a report from citizens or on their own initiative, the environmental inspectors first perform an inspection, ascertain the situation on the ground with a report and issue a decision that will oblige the property owners to act upon the given decision within a given period. If the property owners do not act upon that decision, the inspectors will prepare a new decision, which obliges the PE “Communal Hygiene” to clean the specified location.
Cleaning costs are invoiced to the owner of the private property who created or allowed the illegal dump. In this procedure, inspectors act in accordance with the Law on Waste Management and the Law on Environment. During the last week, after a decision was issued by the environmental inspectors, an illegal landfill was cleaned at the intersection between Goce Delchev Boulevard and Belasica Street, near the East Gate shopping center, which was a decades-old problem for the whole environment.
